Burger Bowls with Mushrooms & Caramelized Onions + Easy Burger Sauce

Burger Bowls with Mushrooms and Caramelized Onions tastes like a Five Guys Burger. At least it does for me since that's what I always order in my burger bowl.

Seriously though, if you meal prep this recipe and eat it at work, your co-workers may give you evil, jealous eyes. It's pretty bougie.

Sweet and savory caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and perfectly seasoned ground beef. Topped with tomato slices, dill pickle chips, iceberg lettuce, shredded cheese, and homemade burger sauce. Sesame seeds are sprinkled over top just to give it that something extra.

Also, Burger Bowls are naturally gluten-free. *Swoon*

Why are Burger Bowls so good?

Not only do they taste amazing, but they are a much healthier version of a typical fast-food burger. It's also a whole heck of a lot cheaper too, which means you're now allowed to eat more burgers in a week than before.

Honestly, Burger Bowls with Burger Sauce is so tasty, you won't even be thinking of bread. It. Doesn't. Need. It. At. All.

Toppings I like to add to my Burger Bowls:

    • Pickle chips. I switch it up between Dill and Bread & Butter.
    • Freshly sliced tomato.
    • Shredded cheese. I normally go for a Mexican blend of cheese (but no spices added!) such as Monterey jack, cheddar, asadero and queso quesadilla cheeses.
    • Caramelized onions.
    • Sautéed Mushrooms.
    • Sesame Seeds. For bonus health, and just for fun to mimic the look of a hamburger bun.

Do I Have To Make Burger Sauce?

Not at all, but you really should.

It comes together very fast (no chopping or anything like that required!) and it tastes delicious. If you've ever tried a fry sauce or a mayo-chup, it's very similar but even more tilt-your-head-back kind of good.

A good alternative to the Burger Sauce would be something along the lines of Thousand Island Dressing.

    Notes on Burger Bowls:

    • Make the dressing in a medium-sized glass bowl and then divvy it up into small sauce containers.
    • Add a pinch of white granulated sugar when sautéing your onions to help speed up the caramelization.
    • For meal prep; you will need three containers for each lunch bowl. In the first container, put all of your cold salad/bowl ingredients (lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles). In the second container, put all of the salad ingredients that need to be heated up (ground beef, onion, mushrooms). The third container is for your Burger Sauce.

    Ingredients

    For the Bowls:

    • 1- 1 ½ lbs. lean ground beef drained
    • 1 head iceberg lettuce pulled apart into small chunks
    • 2 beefsteak tomatoes sliced thinly
    • 8 oz. pickle chips I use dill or bread & butter
    • 16 oz. shredded blend of cheese
    • 16 oz. white button mushrooms sliced
    • 1 large sweet onion sliced into strips
    • 1 tbsp. unsalted butter
    • a pinch of granulated sugar
    • salt and pepper to taste
    • sesame seeds optional

    For the Burger Sauce:

    • 1 cup mayo
    • ½ cup ketchup
    • 4 teaspoon white vinegar
    • 4 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
    • 4 teaspoon granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

    Instructions

    For the Burger Sauce:

    • Add all ingredients to a medium-sized bowl and combine until smooth. Tip: Divide into small sauce containers if meal prepping.

    For the Burger Bowls:

    • Prep: Slice mushrooms and onions into strips. Heat butter in a nonstick pan over medium-low heat. Sauté mushrooms until cooked but still a little firm. Set aside in a bowl. Add the onions to the pan along with a pinch of sugar. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring frequently so they don't burn. Once golden, add to the bowl of mushrooms.
    • Add the ground beef to the same pan, chopping it into small bits with a spatula as it browns. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Once cooked through, place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain the grease.
    • To assemble bowls: lay a bed of lettuce on a large dinner plate, then pile the ground beef, onions, mushrooms, shredded cheese, tomatoes, and pickles on top. Drizzle over the Burger Sauce, and then serve.

    Notes

I prefer to keep my burgers seasoned very simply - only with salt and pepper.
You may add in a dash of Worcestershire or your other usual burger seasonings if you'd like.
