    Gluten Free Waffles are so easy and delicious to make at home you'll regret not having made them sooner. You can even freeze the leftovers and reheat them in a toaster or toaster oven, like you do with store-bought waffles.

    These waffles are like a cross between Belgian waffles (though these do NOT have the signature ingredients like yeast or pearl sugar) and your classic freezer waffle. They're fluffy and soft on the inside, and golden and crispy on the outside. Pure vanilla extract gives them that tantalizing Belgian smell and taste, without all of the fuss.

    Real talk, these Gluten Free Waffles mean so much to me. It had been eight years since I had waffles prior to making this recipe (the boxed brands don't agree with me).

    As a kid and even to this day, my family vacations on Chincoteague Island, Virginia. There used to be the BEST ice cream parlor set in an old farmhouse on Main Street called Muller's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour. (Look it up to see some pics on Yelp!) You could mosey through the front screen porch into the house and through its many rooms to find a table. Their famous dish was Belgian waffles with fresh sliced peaches, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and a cherry on top. It was SO good.

    This recipe takes me back to those moments as a child, and I will soon have to recreate that famous waffle dish.

    Gluten Free Waffles

    Tips for Making the Best Gluten Free Waffles:

    • Allow the batter to rest while the waffle maker is heating up. This allows time for the rice flour to properly absorb the liquid, reducing potential grittiness.
    • Be sure the batter is a somewhat thick consistency, not so thin as to where it will run all over the waffle maker and be a mess. This batter should be able to be scooped out with a cookie scoop and hold its shape.
    • Use a 2-tbsp cookie scoop to measure out the batter and drop it in the center of the waffle maker.
    • Keep a close eye on the waffle maker as the waffle cooks, especially if it doesn't have a timer or sound to let you know when it's done. In my case, I used the Dash Mini Waffle Maker. It doesn't beep. But it's easy enough to lift up the lid and check her out. It took about two minutes per waffle.
    • Use a silicone spatula to lift the waffle out of the waffle maker. You don't want to use any kind of metal here so it doesn't damage the nonstick coating.
    • Be sure to thoroughly brush the waffle maker with oil before cooking the waffles. I used a basting brush. The instructions for the Dash mini waffle maker recommend NOT using nonstick sprays, as they contain additives that will dry onto the device and cause stickiness over time.
    • Make the batter, cook your waffles, and let your family cook their own. This is a great interactive breakfast item, where the chef totally can pawn the cooking off on their own children. Think of it like a hotel buffet, without the powdered eggs.

    Ingredients for Gluten Free Waffles:

    (Dry Ingredients)

    • High quality gluten-free all purpose flour containing xanthan gum
    • Granulated sugar
    • Baking powder
    • Salt

    (Wet Ingredients)

    • Half & half, or milk (including plant-based, such as almond milk)
    • Eggs
    • Vegetable oil, or other neutral oil
    • Pure vanilla extract

    How to Make Gluten Free Waffles:

    • In a medium-sized mixing bowl, add the gluten-free flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk until well-combined.
    • In a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, half & half, oil, granulated sugar, and pure vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
    • Add the dry ingredients into the wet, stirring until smooth. Tip: It's okay if there's some lumps in the batter. It should be nice and thick, slightly thicker than pancake batter.
    • Grease your waffle maker with oil using a basting brush. Meanwhile, allow the batter to rest while the waffle maker heats up.
    • Once the waffle maker is ready, use a 2-tbsp cookie scoop to measure out one waffle. Scoop the batter into the center of the bottom mold of the waffle maker.
    • Close the waffle maker, and cook until the waffle maker signals it's ready, or until the waffle reaches your desired color. Using the DASH mini waffle maker, it took about 2 minutes per waffle.
    Gluten Free Waffles
    • Remove the waffle from the waffle maker with a silicone spatula.
    • Repeat until all of the batter has been used up.
    • Serve with butter, maple syrup, and fresh fruit. No one's judging if you add some whipped cream. 😉

    Equipment

    You only need basic tools to make Gluten Free Waffles. I recommend:

    • A waffle maker. The DASH Mini Waffle Maker only costs $9.99, has 242K reviews, and takes up very little space. It makes the size of round waffle you'd get from the freezer aisle at any grocery store.
    • If you want to make large waffles, I recommend this Cuisinart Classic Round Waffle Maker.
    • A cookie scoop for scooping the batter without any mess.
    • A basting brush for rubbing the waffle maker with oil.
    • A silicone spatula for removing the waffle without scraping the nonstick coating of the waffle maker.
    • A whisk is helpful in this recipe.
    • A Maple Syrup Dispenser

    How to Store Gluten Free Waffles:

    You can store Gluten Free Waffles in an airtight container or gallon bag in the refrigerator for up to three days, or in the freezer for up to three months.

    To reheat: Remove the desired amount of waffles from the freezer and toast them until hot and crispy, either in a toaster, toaster oven, or oven. Top with your favorite waffle toppings.

    • Cuisinart Classic Round Waffle Maker (large round dinner-plate waffles)
    • basting brush

    Ingredients

    For the Dry Mix:

    • 2 cups high quality gluten-free all purpose flour containing xanthan gum I used King Arthur's Gluten Free Measure for Measure.
    • 4 teaspoon baking powder
    • ¼ teaspoon salt

    For the Wet Mix:

    • 1 ⅔ cup half & half or milk, or plant-based milk*
    • ¼ cup granulated sugar
    • 2 large eggs
    • ½ cup vegetable oil
    • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

    Instructions

    *Waffles made with half&half will yield a thicker, easier to handle batter as compared to waffles made with milk. If the batter is too thin, try adding in 1-2 tablespoon more flour.
