What are the Benefits of Spinach?
Spinach is nutrient-dense and contains many vitamins and minerals. Vitamin K, A, and C. Folate. Iron. Magnesium. Potassium. Calcium. Just to name a few. Spinach is mild in flavor and most nutrient-dense when eaten raw, which is exactly what makes it the perfect ingredient for a green smoothie.
Plus who doesn't love eating healthy greens first thing in the morning, without even having to work for it?
Spinach also is:
- high in antioxidants
- thought to help with memory, blood pressure, metabolism, and inflammation
- thought to protect against heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer
- an anti-inflammatory
How to make a Pineapple Spinach Smoothie:
While this recipe only has a few ingredients and a few simple steps, you must follow the instructions in order. This is especially if you don't have a very powerful blender. Otherwise, if you put all of the ingredients together at once, you could end up with chunks of spinach in your smoothie. I'm going to bet you don't want that.
- *The important step* Pack a one-cup measurement full of spinach and dump it into a blender. Add one cup of water. Blend for 30 seconds, or until there are no longer any bits of spinach - it should resemble green spinach water. See the photo below.
Don't panic here, I promise the smoothie will turn apple green in the next step.
- Then, add in remaining ingredients; frozen mango, frozen pineapple, banana, and yogurt to the blender.
Use at least one frozen ingredient so the smoothie is nice and cold, as well as thick. I try to never use ice cubes in smoothies, as they tend to water down the flavors of the fresh ingredients.
Tip: Buy a whole fresh pineapple or several mangos in bulk when they go on sale, chop them up, and freeze them in gallon bags to enjoy in smoothies for months to come.
- Blend for 30-60 seconds, until smooth. Serve in a glass and drink cold.
Optional: Spoon some chia seeds or hemp seeds on top of your smoothie for added health benefits.
Pineapple Spinach Smoothie Notes:
- You can prep the ingredients for this smoothie ahead of time and store individual serving bags in your freezer. Simply ½ this recipe and put everything, except for the water, yogurt, and spinach, in a sandwich bag. When ready to eat; blend fresh spinach with water, empty out contents of the bag in your blender cup, and add in yogurt. Some folks freeze yogurt in an ice cube tray and then freeze alongside smoothie ingredients, but I haven't personally tried this. You can also freeze your spinach, but keep it separate from the rest of the ingredients so you can blend it separately first.
- Wanting to add even more nutrients? Try swapping water for full fat coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk, or coconut water. You can even use pineapple juice. I recommend using ½ cup water and ½ cup pineapple juice, otherwise the flavor will be overpowering. Note: If you try any add-in's, the color of the smoothie will vary.
- If you replace the milk with full fat coconut milk, you should omit the yogurt.
- Looking to add more green? Try adding in a kiwi, a cucumber, or some green grapes.
- Never add any red berries or juices to a green smoothie. Red + green = brown. You will make the ugliest beverage creation to exist. Trust me. Been there, done that.
Pineapple Spinach Smoothie
- 1 cup baby spinach packed
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup frozen pineapple
- ½ cup frozen mango
- 1 banana
- 2-3 heaping spoonfuls organic plain full-fat yogurt or greek yogurt
- chia or hemp seeds sprinkled on top of smoothie

- Add in the remaining ingredients; frozen mango, frozen pineapple, banana, and yogurt. Blend for 30-60 seconds, or until completely smooth. Serve in a glass. Optional: Sprinkle chia or hemp seeds overtop for bonus health.
